When we were first getting to know each other, a friend asked, “So, who are your people?” I wasn’t sure what she meant at first. “You know, who do you hang out with, where do you go, what groups do you belong to?” Yikes. I’m not a joiner. Online workshops and Zoom poetry readings are more my comfort level.
I am only now realizing the importance of this question.
Before my husband, Kent, died, he was my tribe.
Over the years, I have found my tribes. Plural. Tribe: people we call our own. Thanks to my Stone Ridge Library Writing Group tribe, led by Catherine Arra, I am proud to announce that I received first place in Anthology’s 2024 Poetry Competition for my poem Through the Membrane. It’s an amazingly beautiful magazine.
Thanks to my International Women’s Writing Guild Tribe, I am hosting the reading for our latest anthology: Write Forward: A Constellation of Voices on Thursday, June 26th at 12:00 ET. You can register for the Zoom here. I have two previously published poems in the anthology, “Dear Grandchildren of Our Grandchildren” (Grand Dame Literary) and “Dressing Mom” (Ponderings).
The Modern Widows Club is my latest find. I attended their “Health and Wellbeing Day” in Heathrow, Florida. My tribes grow. More on the experience later. That’s why I need a Part Two for this post.
I am excited to attend the double book launch from AIM Higher Press, whose mission is (in part) “… cultivating & conserving the vibrancy & essentiality of the arts.” How cool is that? Join the Zoom HERE. One of my favorite humans, Joshua Davis, will be there, and I can’t wait to meet Christina Cook.
